๐ About this Book
Winter in the Air is a collection of short stories by Sylvia Townsend Warner, many originally published in The New Yorker. Set largely in mid-20th-century England, the stories explore marriage, affairs, loneliness, widowhood, family tensions, outsiders, and the quiet complications of everyday life.
Warner moves between melancholy, irony, wit, and something slightly unsettling. A woman returns to the village where her troubled marriage unfolded, a schoolboy experiences an emotionally charged encounter on a train, a murder raises fears of blackmail, and other characters face private disappointments, strange desires, and unexpected moments of freedom.

โค๏ธ Why Sumaia Recommends It
I would recommend this to readers who love quiet, character-focused stories where the smallest moments carry a lot of emotion.
There is something very observant about Warnerโs writing. These stories are not loud or dramatic in an obvious way, but underneath them are loneliness, regret, complicated relationships, and all the things people conveniently refuse to say out loud. Very human behavior, naturally.
