📖 About this Book
It’s 1963, and by every conventional measure, Margaret Ryan should be perfectly happy. She has a husband, three children, a comfortable home in a beautiful Northern Virginia suburb, and all the trappings of the American dream. Yet she cannot shake the feeling that something is missing.
Everything begins to change when Margaret meets intriguing new neighbor Charlotte and impulsively starts a book club with Charlotte and two other women, Bitsy and Viv. Their first selection is Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique, and suddenly their friendly gatherings over books, cocktails, and conversation become something much more important.
As the four women begin questioning the lives they have been told they should want, their friendship gives them the courage to imagine something different. Warm, funny, nostalgic and thoughtful, the novel explores female friendship, self-discovery and the changing expectations placed on women during a pivotal moment in American history.
❤️ Why Sumaia Recommends It
★★★★★
I absolutely loved this one. It has everything I enjoy in a character-driven historical novel: strong female friendships, women finding their voices, personal growth and books bringing people together.
What stayed with me most was the friendship between these four women. They are very different from one another, but their little book club slowly becomes a safe place where they can be honest about their marriages, dreams, frustrations and the lives they actually want.
It’s uplifting without pretending change is easy, and I loved watching these women become braver together. Definitely one of those books that reminds you how powerful friendship, community and reading can be.
