๐ About this Book
First published in 1864, Notes from Underground is one of Fyodor Dostoevskyโs most influential and psychologically intense works. The story is narrated by an unnamed former civil servant living in isolation in St. Petersburg, a deeply bitter, self-aware man who has deliberately withdrawn from society.
Through his rambling, contradictory confessions, the Underground Man examines free will, pride, loneliness, human irrationality and his own inability to connect meaningfully with others. Darkly funny at times and painfully uncomfortable at others, the novella challenges the idea that human beings will always act rationally or in their own best interests. It is widely regarded as an important precursor to existentialist literature.

โค๏ธ Why Sumaia Recommends It
โ โ โ โ โ
This is the kind of classic that makes you stop reading and just stare at the page for a minute. It is short, but definitely not light. Dostoevsky takes you directly into the mind of someone who is intelligent enough to understand his own destructive behaviour, yet seems completely incapable of escaping it.
I especially recommend it for readers who enjoy philosophical books, complicated narrators and stories that make you question human behaviour long after finishing them. The Underground Man is frustrating, fascinating and incredibly human, which is probably why people are still arguing about him more than 160 years later.
