Breasts and Eggs follows three women in contemporary Japan: Natsuko, her older sister Makiko, and Makiko’s teenage daughter Midoriko. Makiko travels to Tokyo while considering breast enhancement surgery, while Midoriko has stopped speaking as she struggles with puberty, her changing body, and the pressures of becoming a woman. 
Years later, the novel returns to Natsuko, now a writer confronting questions about motherhood, loneliness, sexuality, and whether she wants to have a child on her own terms. Through their lives, Mieko Kawakami explores womanhood, body autonomy, beauty standards, reproductive choices, class, and the expectations placed on women.
